Deveney Wells-Gibson led Sam Houston with 22 kills as the Bearkats fell in five sets to Stephen F. Austin in a Southland Conference volleyball Tuesday night at Nacogdoches.
The Lumberjacks edged the Kats 25-20 15-25 25-23 23-25 15-6 to up their season record to 11-3. SFA stands 2-0 in Southland action. Sam Houston dropped to 5-9 for the year and 1-2 in league action.
During the first four sets, there were 26 ties and 10 lead changes. But SFA jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the fifth set and never trailed on the way to clinching the match. Jill Ivy, who led the Jacks with 18 kills, got the winning attack on match point.
Haley Neisler added 14 kills for Sam Houston. The junior also totaled five blocks. Tayler Gray assisted on 39 of SHSU's 50 kills. Gray and Wells-Gibson each had 15 digs.
