MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Zach Cabra earned individual medalist honors as Sam Houston State won the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate hosted by Kansas State.
Cabra shot a second-round 67 on the 7,486-yard, par-72 Colbert Hills Golf Course. The junior transfer fired a 73 in the first and final rounds to finish three under and win the tournament by six strokes.
“I knew we were strong going in and I knew if we played each shot well we'd be in contention. I encouraged the team to focus on that,” said Bearkat head coach Brandt Kieschnick. “The course was hard and if you messed up it was going to be a high score.”
Freshman Klein Klotz was outstanding again in just his second collegiate tournament. Klotz finished sixth after shooting 76-74-76-226.
Senior Albert Miner was tied for ninth after firing 77-76-76-229 while Logan Boatner (77-80-75-232) made up ground on the final day and finished 13th. Kyle Hodges (80-84-87-251) finished 47th.
Cabra has started the season extremely well. In the first tournament of the season he set a school and course record with a first-round 62 at Southern Miss.
“Zach (Cabra) just had another solid week,” Kischnick said. “He shot three under on one of the hardest courses we'll play all year and I'm extremely proud of him.”
Kansas State finished two shots back of SHSU in second place after holding a two-shot lead over the Kats going into the final round. The Wildcats won their home event by 11 strokes last season.
“The thing I'm most proud of is that we beat Kansas State on their own course,” said Kischnick. “They know every blade of grass out there and it's one of the toughest we'll play all year. We played collectively as a team about two to three under in the last few holes. This is just a really good win for our program and a great way to start the season.”
The Bearkats will return to Huntsville to host the Sam Houston Harold Funston Invitational Oct. 7-8 at Raven Nest.
