
Bowling runners-up in first tournament

The No. 6-ranked Sam Houston bowling team and Stephen F. Austin's No. 9 rated Lumberjacks battled twice Sunday afternoon in best-of-seven bracket play on the final day of the All State Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational.
The Kats won in six bakers, 190-213, 240-188, 185-156, 171-138, 204-210, 184-143, in the first match between the two top seeded squads in the final day draw.
But in the finals for the first place trophy, SFA edged Sam Houston 4.5 to 2.5 in seven bakers by a score of 152-200, 202-202, 189-169, 224-176, 153-211, 201-188, 227-149.
The loss left Sam Houston 9-2 for the tournament with the Bearkats taking home the runner-up trophy in their first tournament of the year.
Erin Brown, Neishka Cardona and Becca Pittser of Sam Houston all were named to the All-Tournament team. In traditional team action Saturday, Brown posted a 209.4 average and Cardona and Pittser followed with averages of 208.8 and 207.4, respectively.
Sam Houston went 3-1 on Friday in quad baker action and was 5-0 in Saturday's tradition team play.
The highlight of Saturday's action was a new Sam Houston team high game set at 1180 highlighted by Pittser's 279 game.
Friday in quad baker action, Sam Houston defeated Tulane 812-618, Florida A&M 681-675 and Louisiana Tech 784-724. No. 9 Stephen F. Austin handed SHSU its only loss of the tournament in a 774-748 decision.
On Saturday, the Kats knocked over Prairie View A&M 1180-978, Alabama State 1024-897, Texas Southern 967-906, Jackson State 940-637 and Bethune-Cookman 923-848.
Sam Houston totaled 3,783 pins on Friday and 5,033 on Saturday.
The event featured an 11-team field at the All Star Lanes in Kenner,La.
