The No. 6 ranked Sam Houston women's bowling team begin play Friday in its fourth tournament of the 2013 fall schedule as the Bearkats face an 11-team field in the Hornet Invitational in Montgomery, Ala.
The event will be held at the Brunswick Zone Lanes.
The Bearkats bring a 26-13 won-loss record into the event. Sam Houston was the runner-up in their first tournament of the year, the Tulane Invitational at Kenner, La., in October. The Kat bowlers have placed seventh in fields laden with nationally ranked squads in their past two events, the New Jersey Jamboree and the Valparaiso Crusader Classic.
The Kats stand 12-12 in matches against teams ranked among the top 20 in the country. Their best win so far this season was a 4-3 victory over No. 4 ranked Arkansas State in best of seven quad baker bracket action last week at Valparaiso.
Sam Houston is the only ranked team in this week's field which includes Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Jackson State, Tulane, Alabama-Birmingham, Texas Southern, Florida A&M, Louisiana Tech, Southern and Grambling.
The Bearkats return six bowlers from last year's squad that rolled up 102 dual match victories and earned Sam Houston's second NCAA Elite Eight berth in the program's three-season history. The squad won five regular season tournament champions.
Seniors Neishka Cardona and Kimi Davidson, members of all three previous Bearkat squads, are the team's leaders. Other players back from last year's squad that posted 42 victories over top 25 teams include Erin Brown, Anna Groce, and Rebecca Pittser. Newcomers to the bowling team are Janine Kuwahara, Madeleine McDuff and Jeanette Van Gundy.
