
Bowlers go 7-7 in Nebraska with 3 big wins

Sam Houston's No. 6 ranked women's bowling team picked up three wins over nationally ranked opponents and ended with a 7-7 overall record Thursday through Saturday at the Big Red Invitational in Lincoln, Nebr.
The event, hosted by No. 1 ranked University of Nebraska, features six nationally squads in the competition.
The Bearkats went 3-3 in traditional team play Friday and 2-3 in Thursday's opening quad baker play. Sam Houston has posted an impressive victory over No. 3 Central Missouri Friday and a pair of victories against No. 14 Valparaiso.
The Bearkats opened Thursday with the No. 1 Cornhuskers, falling 786-665 in quad baker action. The Kats also lost to No. 8 Wisconsin-Whitewater 760-635 and No. 3 Central Missouri 818-780.
Sam Houston bounced back in its final two matches, defeating Elmhurst 784-592 and McKendree 795-750.
Friday, the Kats started with a 931-900 win for No. 14 Valparaiso. Sam Houston lost three straight to nationally ranked foes by scores of 929-886 to No. 4 Arkansas State, 1,070-955 to No. 1 Nebraska and 1,012-851 to No. 8 Wisconwin-Whitewater.
Just as they did on Thursday, the Sam Houston women rebounded for a big 1,099-1037 victory over No. 3 Central Missouri and a 927-892 win against Elmhurst.
Friday in the six traditional team matches, Anna Groce led the Bearkats with a 204.83 pin average including a 257 performance in the fifth match of the day. Groce produced a total pin count of 1,229 playing in all six games.
Becca Pittser (1,165 pins, 194.17 average), Kimi Davidson (1,146 pins, 191.0 average) and Neishka Cardona (1,081 pins, 180.17 average) also participated in all six contests.
Janine Kuwahara (585 pins, 195.0 average) and Erin Brown (443 pins, 147.67 average) split time, each playing in three matches.
As a team the Bearekats had a total pin count of 5,649
Saturday, Sam Houston defeated McKendree 1,012-872 and picked up another their second win over Valparaiso 895-838 before falling to No. 4 Arkansas State 1,078-936.
“It's been a roller coaster for us but we picked up some wins,” SHSU head coach Brad Hagen said. “On Saturday, we had a much better day."
Sam Houston now stands 44-21 in dual match play for the season. The Bearkats have won 15 of their 34 matches against top 20 rated teams this year.
