
Hardy Earns "Student-Athlete" of Year Honor

Sam Houston State graduate student Shelby Hardy is the 2013 Southland Women's Golf “Student-Athlete of the Year”, the league office announced Monday in conjunction with the release of the Academic All-Conference women's golf team.
Hardy, a native San Saba, becomes the second Sam Houston State women's golfer to be named student-athlete of the year for the sport, joining Jennifer Heinz (2008).
Her selection marks the 17th time since 2007 that a Bearkat has been named as the league's student-athlete of the year for the individual's sport.
Working on her masters' in curriculum and instruction, Hardy finished undergraduate with a 3.12 grade-point average and has a perfect 4.00 GPA in graduate school.
A four-time all-conference selection, Hardy won medalist honors at the Southland Conference Women's Golf Championship with a conference tournament record three-round total of 4-under par 212. Hardy led the Bearkats with a 75.03 stroke average, the lowest stroke average in Bearkat women's golf history. She finished in the top 10 in eight of the 11 tournament she played this season including earning medalist honors at Oral Roberts and Alabama-Birmingham.
As a member of the 2013 five-player honor squad, Hardy is the only repeat selection on the all-academic team, making her third appearance.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 10 member schools, voted for the student-athlete of the year.
The student-athlete of the year award is presented to the student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated achievement in athletics for at least two years at the nominating institution.
The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors from each Southland Conference university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
Past Sam Houston “Student-Athlete of the Year” award winners have been Lata Assudani (women's tennis 2007), Luke Pridhoda (baseball 2007), Jennie Sewell (outdoor track & field 2007), Ryan Bright (men's basketball 2007 & 2008), Jennifer Heinz (women's golf 2008), Barkley Falkner (men's basketball 2009), Irina Sotnikova (women's tennis 2009), Brittany Brooks (women's basketball 2010), Chris Cralle (men's indoor track 2011 & outdoor track 2011), Morgan Davis (women's indoor track 2012 & 2013), James Glenn (men's golf 2012) and Jake Arrington (baseball 2012).
