
Academic All-Southland Bearkat Netters

Sheridan Currie and Natalie Petaia of Sam Houston both have been named to the 2013 Academic All-Southland Conference honor squad.
The pair join 10 other players on the academic all-conference squad. The team is selected by vote of the league's head tennis coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
Currie, a first team selection, and Petaia, a second team honoree, combined to help lead Sam Houston to a 2013 semifinal finish in the Southland Conference post-season tournament. The Bearkats placed sixth in the league during the regular season.
Currie, a senior health major from Mount Pleasant, Perth, Australia, compiled a 3.59 overall grade point average during her four years as a Bearkat.
A second team All-Southland Conference selection this season, she is the 2013 Sam Houston tennis “Most Valuable Player.” Currie won six of her nine matches at number two singles in Southland play. The four-year letter winner completed her Sam Houston career ranked No. 9 in all-time singles victories.
Petaia, a junior from Queensland, Australia, also won six of her nine singles matches in conference play and finished the year with a 16-14 overall record. She is an international business major with a 3.63 overall grade point average.
Currie and Petaia were doubles partners, going 6-3 at the number two position during the league season.
