Kenneth Garza, who led Sam Houston State to its first Southland Baseball Championship, has been named to the conference's 1980s All-Decade team. The 1989 regular-season title was the Bearkats' only one since winning back-to-back in 2012 and 2013
Garza posted an 8-3 record with a 2.31 ERA in 1989 and was named the Southland Pitcher of the Year. He led the team in wins and ERA in 18 appearances as a senior in '89. The Texas City product also had a team-high three saves that year.
He lettered two seasons at Sam Houston, in 1988 and 1989.
The Bearkats advanced to the NCAA Regionals in Austin where they fell to Oklahoma State, 6-5, and New Orleans, 8-4. Garza did not pitch in the regional.
Two years earlier, in 1987, the Kats won two games in the NCAA Austin Regional. SHSU knocked off Oklahoma, 5-1, in the opening game and eliminated Indiana State, 10-8.
The Southland Conference will continue to recognize all-decade teams in the coming days.
