The Sam Houston State men's golf team will be looking for a third straight tournament title as they co-host the Miramont Invitational with Rice University at Miramont Country Club in Bryan. Golf Digest rates the Miramont as one of the top-10 courses in the state of Texas.
“I'm excited to host with Rice. They're a good program with a good coach,” Sam Houston head coach Brandt Kieschnick said. “We're getting a really quality field with two top-50 teams and four teams in the top-70. I'm excited about the competition and the venue.”
The tournament gets underway Monday with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun. The 54-hole tournament will feature 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday.
The Bearkats won the Wisconsin Badger Invitational two weeks ago before coming home to win the SHSU Harold Funston Intercollegiate at Raven Nest last week. Zach Cabra claimed individual medalist honors for the second straight season at the Funston Intercollegiate.
Rice opened the season with an 11th place finish at the Southern Miss Sam Hall Intercollegiate, where the Kats finished fifth. The Owls then finished seventh at Colorado State's home event at Fort Collins Country Club and last week Rice placed 12th at LSU.
The Bearkats and Owls will be joined by Columbia, Houston, Houston Baptist, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, McNeese State, Southeastern Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State, UT-Arlington and UTSA.
The 7,174 yard, par-72 course is situated around a lavish 93,000 square-foot clubhouse. The championship course is designed by world-renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and features gently rolling terrain, vibrant seasonal foliage and multiple water features.
“Miramont is a high-end private facility and we get access to play there throughout the year and then to be able to host is great. The golf course will draw in some great teams. It is just a fantastic place and a great asset for Rice and Sam Houston,” said Kieschnick.
The Sam Houston men will close out their fall schedule next week at the New Mexico State Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M.
