Singles flight title highlights SFA event

Mila Milanovic, a freshman from Lleoda, Spain, highlighted play at the Stephen F. Austin Invitational this weeked for the Sam Houston State women's tennis team.
Milanovic won the singles “D” flight championship, defeating players from Tarleton State, Incarnate Word and Lamar. She beat Gabriella Jansson 6-0 6-1 in the opening round, Taryn Strahl 7-5 6-1 in the semifinals and Hanna Elfving 6-4 6-2 in the finals.
In the singles “A” flight, Sam Houston senior Olivia Battye from Liverpool, England, reached the third place match but had to default due to illness. Battye won her opening round over Luiza Adas of Tarleton 4-6 6-1 1-0 (10).
Also in the “A” flight, Fabienne Gettwart, a freshman from Deiech, Hessen,Germany reached the consolation finals after an 0-6 6-1 1-0 (8) victory over Tyra Timm of Saint Mary's.
Karen Martinez, Bearkat junior from Cali, Columbia, dropped a close match to Lera Terentyeva of SFA in the first round 5-7 6-3 1-0 (6) in the “B” flight. Bailey VanDyke lost to another SFA player in the opening round of the “C” flight 6-2 7-5.
Caitlyn Mitchell, a freshman from Nhulnbury, Northern Territories, Australia, took third place in the “E” flight singles. She posted wins of 6-1 6-1 over Bri Creek of Incarnate Word and 7-5 6-4 versus Lara Delli Castelli of Lamar.
Next action for the Bearkat tennis team will be the annual ITA Regional tournament in Waco.
