Sporting a 21-4 season record that includes 10 victories over nationally-ranked opponents, Sam Houston's No. 3 ranked women's bowling team will compete in the Crusader Classic this weekend.
The tournament is hosted by Valparaiso University at Inman's Recreation Center in Valparaiso, Indiana.
The Bearkats are one of 10 nationally-ranked squads in the 14-team field. Other top 20 teams competing include No. 1 Nebraska, No. 2 Arkansas State, No. 4 Vanderbilt, No. 6 Central Missouri, No. 8 Wisconsin-Whitewater, No. 16 McKendree, No. 18 Alabama State, No. 20 Monmouth and host No. 15 Valparaiso.
The Valparaiso Crusader Classic is Sam Houston's third event of the year but it will be the first change the Bearkats have to face rivals Nebraska, Central Missouri and Arkansas State. The SHSU women defeated Nebraska in the NCAA finals last April to earn the women's bowling national championship.
Becca Pittser and Heather Penatzer sport Sam Houston's top averages in tradition team. Penatzer owns a 210.44 mean in 16 games while Pittser has a 211.25 average in four games. Other Sam Houston tradition team averages include Janine Kuwahara (210.07 in 14 games), Carrie Hopkinson (200.57 in seven games), Anna Groce (199.56 in 16 games), Stephanie Zavala (195.88 in 16 games) and Erin Brown (191.71 in seven games).
The tournament format calls for six quad baker matches on Friday, six traditional team matches on Saturday and one more team match on Sunday followed by best of seven baker bracket play.
