Sam Houston's Bearkats produced the fifth highest team grade point average (GPA) in NCAA Division I women's bowling on the way to the national championship this year.
The National Ten Pin Coaches Association has announced the list of the top 20 institutions in NCAA bowling with team GPAs above a 3.2 for academic year 2013-14.
Five Bearkat bowlers earned NTCA All-Academic honors nationally. Senior Kimi Davidson was a third-team member of the NTCA All-Academic honor squad. Senior Neishka Cardona, sophomores Erin Brown and Anna Groce and freshman Janine Kuwahara were honorable mention selections.
“At Sam Houston, our goal is to achieve both academically and athletically,” SHSU head coach Brad Hagen said. “The NCTA's recognition of the Bearkats as one of the top five bowling teams in the country academically is a mark of which we are proud.”
The Bearkats rolled unbeaten through four contests in double elimination baker match play at the NCAA Elite Eight in Wickliffe, Ohio, in April to earn a spot in the national finals. The Kats then defeated defending national champion Nebraska four games to two in the championship match televised nationally by ESPN.
