
Andrew Ertel joins Bearkat golf program

Andrew Ertel, a transfer from University of Houston, will join the Sam Houston men's golf program this fall.
The Woodlands High School product red-shirted as a sophomore at UH last season after a successful freshman season in 2012-13.
He joins a Sam Houston men's golf program that won the Southland Conference championship this spring and advanced to the NCAA Championships Auburn regional. The Bearkats missed a berth in the national finals tournament by only five strokes.
“Andrew comes to us after one of our best seasons in school history,” SHSU head coach Brandt Kieschnick said. “We have all but one player returning from the championship team so Andrew has the opportunity to come in and be an impact player for us. He will provide depth to our already talented lineup.”
Ertel's freshman season with the Cougars he posted three top 15 finishes including a ninth place performance in Sam Houston's 2012 Harold Funston Invitational at Raven Nest. He also placed high in the Rice Intercollegiate and the HBU Husky Invitational.
“Andrew already has made a splash this summer. In June, he had a chance to win the prestigious Texas State Amateur going to the final round and finished with a top 10 for second straight year," Kieschnick said. "He backed his solid play at Texas Amateur by finishing tied for 16th at Greystone Invitational at even par. With three years of eligibility, he will help us maintain a very high level of play.”
Ertel was a four-year letterman for head coach Steve Cribari at the Woodlands where he received the Highlighted Highlander Award. He was the runner-up at the AJGA Signsational Signs Junior at The Woodlands and earned numerous AJGA top-15 individual finishes. Ertel was a 2012 USGA US Junior Amateur Championship qualifier.
His senior season he led the Highlanders to the district championship and was a state medalist qualifier after finishing second individually at the regional tournament.
