Men finish fifth at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURGH, Miss. -- JT Taylor returned from missing all of 2013 to post a top-10 finish at the Southern Mississippi Sam Hall Intercollegiate at Hattiesburg Country Club. Sam Houston State finished fifth in the field of 15 teams.
Southeastern Louisiana pulled away on the final day of the event to claim its first team title of the season. The Lions finished 16 strokes under par as a team. The hosts Southern Miss were second, five strokes ahead of third-place Louisiana-Lafayette.
Ole Miss finished just one stroke ahead of the Bearkats to take the fourth spot in the standings.
Taylor had a solid tournament, firing a 69 in the second round and a 68 in the final round. He finished seventh and was 10 strokes back of USM's Casey Fernandez, who claimed individual medalist honors.
Sophomore Klein Klotz finished strong with a third-round 68, climbing to 11th in the individual standings. Klotz fired seven birdies in the final round of the tournament.
Senior Zach Cabra, last season's Southland Newcomer of the Year, started strong with a first-round 68. He shot a 73 in the second round and a 74 in the third to finish tied for 28th.
Newcomer Andrew Ertel rallied from a first-round 76 to shoot a 69 in the second round and a 71 in the final round. He finished tied for 36th in his first competitive event for the Bearkats.
Freshman Jake McCrory (78-73-76-227) finished tied for 75th and senior Logan Boatner (74-75-76-225), who was playing as an individual finished 70th.
The Bearkats will have two weeks off before travelling to the University of Wisconsin Badger Invitational at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisc.
