
Bearkats surge to ninth at Bayou City Classic

Despite falling in an early hole, the Sam Houston men's golf team tied for the fourth-lowest second round score to finish the opening 36 holes of the Bayou City Collegiate Classic in ninth at 29-over, 605 from Pearland's par-72, 7,272-yard Golfcrest Country Club.
North Texas leads all 14 squads, including second-place Lamar by eight strokes, at an even-par, 576. The Bearkats, who entered the second round in 13th, sit six strokes back of eighth-place Rice.
Sam Houston's Andrew Ertel leads the squad in a five-way tie for 37th at 7-over, 151. The junior cut nine strokes off his opening round 80, to post a second-round 71, tied for the seventh-lowest second round among the 81 competitors.
Bearkat freshman Mason Weld also chipped away at a first-round deficit, bouncing back from a 79 to shoot a second-round 73, moving 20 spots up the leaderboard to finish in a seven-way tie for 42nd at 8-over, 152.
Freshman teammates Camden DeBonis and Jake McCory finished their days as part of a seven-way deadlock in 49th place at 9-over, 153. For McCrory, a second-round 73 moved the Bearkat 16 spots up the leaderboard after sitting tied for 65th following the opening round. Meanwhile, DeBonis is tied for second with a total of 29 pars.
After posting rounds of 78 and 76, Jesse Massengale, who is competing individually, took a tie for 56th at 10-over, 154, just one stroke off 49th. Dominick Gennuso and Jarred Jeter (individual) follow closely behind at 12-over, 156, in a tie for 61st.
