Bowling In Second After Day 1 of N.J. Jamboree

Sam Houston ranks second in total pins after winning three of its five team matches Friday at the New Jersey Jamboree hosted by Fairleigh-Dickinson University in North Brunswick, New Jersey.
No. 2 ranked Arkansas State won all five of its Friday matches in tradition team play. ASU leads in total pins with a 216.0 team average. The Bearkats averaged a 206.9 pinfall. Total pins will decide the seeding for Sunday's best-of-seven bracket play.
The Bearkats defeated Caldwell 1,041 pins to 787, No. 18 ranked Kutztown 1,042 pins to 856 and Morgan State 1,144 pins to 841. The Kats' losses came by only 10 pins to No. 12 Saint Francis of Pennsylvania 943 to 933 and by 34 pins to No. 14 LIU-Brooklyn 1,046 to 1,012.
“The two matches we lost were close,” Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. “But we dropped the first one because of a slow art and the second a poor finish. Not a bad day but we have to finish stronger when it counts the most.
Host team No. 4 ranked Fairleigh Dickinson and No. 9 McKendree both went 4-1 and rank third and fourth in the first day standings with pin fall averages of 206.3 and 202.2 respectively. No. 5 Vanderbilt was unbeaten in five matches and sports a 200.0 total pins average to rank fifth.
Janine Kuwahara and Anna Groce led the Bearkats with individual averages of 213.0 and 209.0, respectively. Kuwahara ranks ninth in the individual standings and Groce tenth.
Twenty-nine teams are competing in the New Jersey Jamboree. Nineteen of those squads are ranked in the top 25.
“We're not in a bad position, but we need to take care of business Saturday,” Hagen said.
