
Women head west for three weekend matches

The Sam Houston State women's tennis heads to the desert this weekend for dual matches with New Mexico State, Northern Colorado and UTEP.
The Bearkats open play Friday against the New Mexico State in Las Cruces. The Aggies stand 2-3 for the year with a 5-2 victory over Texas State and 4-3 win over UNLV. New Mexico State's losses was to Arizona 7-0, Pacific 4-3 and Kansas 4-0.
Next Sam Houston takes on Northern Colorado on the UNMS courts in Las Cruces at 2 p.m. Saturday (Central Time). UNC is 2-0 this season after opening the season with a 7-0 loss to Colorado and a 5-2 defeat at the hands of Wyoming. Northern Colorado brings a two-match winning streak into the weekend, having defeated Colorado State-Pueblo 6-1 and Metropolitan State 7-0.
UTEP wraps up the three-days of action Sunday at 11 a.m. Central. The Miners are 2-1 with a 6-1 victory over Buffalo, a 6-1 loss to New Mexico and a 5-2 win versus Grand Canyon.
Sam Houston's lineup mixes experience and youth. Seniors Olivia Battye and Karen Martinez play at the No. 1 and No. 5 singles positions, respectively. The two form the Bearkats' No. 1 doubles pairing.
Transfer Bailey VanDyke plays No. 3 in singles and pairs with freshman Mila Milanovich at No. 2 doubles. Milanovich plays No. 4 singles. Freshman Fabienne Gettwart plays No. 2 singles and pairs with No. 6 singles player Maddie Mortimore for the Kats' No. 3 doubles team.
Following the trip west this weekend, the Bearkats will return home to play host to Prairie View A&M at McAdams Tennis Center of Saturday Feb. 21 at 1 p.m.
