
Carrie Hopkinson qualifies for Singles Nationals

Carrie Hopkinson, a junior for Sam Houston's NCAA national championship women's bowling team, has become the first Bearkat to qualify for the Xbowling Intercollegiate Singles National Championships.
The field of 24 men and 16 women who will compete for individual national championships was determined Friday at four sectional qualifiers. The Xbowling Intercollegiate Singles Championships will take place April 14 and 18 at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kansas, with the men's and women's finals broadcast on national television.
Qualifying for the national finals was held in Stratford, New Jersey; Addison, Illinois; Smyrna, Tennessee; and Fort Worth. All participants bowled six games with the top four women at each site advancing.
Wichita State's Daria Kovalova shot 1,385 (230.8) to finish atop the leaderboard in Fort Worth. Carrie Hopkinson of Sam Houston State, Emily Eckhoff of Hastings and Kristie Lopez of Wichita State also punched their ticket via Texas.
Hopkinson battled nearly 100 ladies to take the number two spot overall from Fort Worth. She finished at +114 (219.00 ave-6 gms).
"This is an exciting time for Carrie as well as Sam Houston,” SHSU head coach Brad Hagen said. “She bowled amazing all day and her competitive maturity really showed during Friday's competition.
"Carrie has really been doing her part on the back half of this season,” Hagen said. “This will just add to her confidence moving forward in to post season for Sam Houston."
Hopkinson joined the Bearkat program this fall as a transfer from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.. The junior is from Drumbo, Ontario in Canada.
