Nelson 4th Kats 5th at Southland Golf

Paige Nelson finished fourth in the individual standings to lead Sam Houston as the Bearkats finished in fifth place at the 14th annual Southland Conference women's golf championships Wednesday.
The three-day, 54-hole event was held on the par 72, 6,262-yard Hill Course at Stonebridge Country Club in McKinney, Texas.
Defending champion Lamar took the team crown with a three-day total of 307-296-289 – 892. Central Arkansas was team runner-up shooting 301-301-299 – 901. Houston Baptist (312-304-296 – 912) placed third and Stephen F. Austin (311-298-308 – 917) was fourth.
Sam Houston's team total of 316-305-298 – 919 earn the Kats' fifth place. McNeese State (319-305-296 – 920), A&M-Corpus Christi (323-320-305 – 948) and Incarnate Word (339-315-324 – 978) rounded out the field.
The Cardinals' Wenny Chang and Jessica White tied for individual medalist honors. Change posted a 54-hole score of 77-74-69 – 220 while White totaled 78-72-70 – 220. Brenda Gonzalez of Central Arkansas was the individual third place finisher with a card of 72-76-74 – 222.
Nelson finished a stroke behind Gonzalez after shooting an 80-70-73 – 223 score. The performance marked Nelson's second consecutive top five finish in the Southland tournament. She placed fourth at last year's event
Other finishes for the Bearkats included Sarah Black 11th 79-76-73 – 228, Alisa White 22nd 77-80-77 – 234, Nicole Budnik 29th 84-79-75 – 238 and Celeste Lo 33rd 80-81-81 – 242.
