Sam Houston leads both the individual medalist and team standings after the opening 18 holes of the 52nd Southland Conference men's golf championships Monday.
The tournament is being held on the par 72, 7,219-yard Dye Course at Stonebridge Country Club in McKinney. The event runs through Wednesday.
Sam Houston leads with an even par 288 team total. McNeese State is six strokes back at 294. J. T. Taylor had the day's low score with a two-under 70. Andrew Ertel is tied for eighth in the individual standings with an even par 72.
The Bearkats started fast then hit a few bumps on the back nine but maintained theier lead. Sam Houston's five players combined to post 10 birdies on the front nine as the team made the turn at six under. Andrew Ertel eagled the par five seventh hole.
The back nine, however, surrendered only two birdies as the team was six over on the back nine.
“The back nine is definitely the more challenging and the wind was out of the north today, making it even tougher,” Sam Houston head coach Brandt Kieschnick said. “I was really proud of the way the guys hung in there and kept their composure. A 288 was a good score today. We've got 36 more holes to go and need to maintain that focus.”
Taylor and Ertel both made the turn with two-under 34's on the front nine. Taylor was even par on the back nine and Erdel two-over.
Southland Conference defending individual medalist champion Zach Cabra carded a one-over 73, playing the front nine in one-under and the final eighteen in two-over. He stands tied for 11th in Monday's individual standings. Logan Boatner is tied with Cabra at 11 also with a 73 total. Jake McCrory stands in 23rd place with a 76.
Trailing the Bearkats and the Cowboys in the standing are Houston Baptist (298) and Southeastern Louisiana (304) in third and fourth followed by New Orleans (308), Stephen F. Austin (309), Abilene Christian (312), Lamar (313), Incarnate Word (313), Nichols (315) and Central Arkansas (316).
Andreas Krokeide of McNeese, Isaiah Huerta and Andy Ariens of Houston Baptist, Grady Brame of Southeastern Louisiana, Corbin Renner of ACU and Gregory Wiggins of Lamar all are tied for second place in the individual standings with one-under totals of 71 Monday.
