Five Kats & Head Coach Earn SLC Golf Honors

Sam Houston's Zach Cabra and J. T. Taylor have been named as first team selections on the 2015 All-Southland Conference men's golf first team and Bearkat head coach Brandt Kieschnick has been voted as the league's “Coach of the Year.”
In addition, the other three members of the Kats' 2015 men's golf conference championship team – Logan Boatner, Andrew Ertel and Jake McCrory – were recognized as honorable All-Southland.
Kieschnick claimed his second consecutive coach of the year honor after leading the Bearkats to another Southland Conference championship in 2015. With the title, Sam Houston earned the league's automatic bid to an NCAA regional, which will be the second Division I postseason trip for Sam Houston in program history.
The coach stands as the only person in conference history to earn coach of the year and player of the year honors, having been tabbed player of the year in 1997 and 1999 while at Sam Houston.
Kieschnick coached a Bearkat squad that won two tournament titles along with the Southland Championships. Sam Houston also earned victories coming at Badger Invitational hosted by Wisconsin in September and the Sam Houston State Harold Funston Invitational in October.
Cabra earned first-team honors for the second straight season after averaging a league-low 71.22 strokes in 32 rounds. The senior from McKinney, Texas, has seven top-five finishes, including a win at Harold Funston Invitational and the Bayou City Collegiate Championship. Cabra's fifth-place tie at the conference championship helped the Bearkats successfully defend their title.
Taylor earned his first all-conference honor after earning medalist honors at the conference championship with 3-under par 213 (70-72-71). Taylor was the only player in the field to shoot par or better in all three rounds. The senior from Conroe, Texas, has four top-10 finishes on the season and averaged 72.88 strokes in 32 rounds.
Boatner posted a 73.75 stroke average playing in each tournament for Sam Houston. His top finishes included fourth place at the UTSA tournament fifth place at Wisconsin.
Ertel also sported a 73.75 stroke average with three top ten tournament finishes including ninth place performances at New Mexico State and Texas State.
McCrory was one of the top freshman in the league this year with a 73.81 stroke average. His top performance was an 11th place finish at the Border Olympics.
The Sam Houston golfers will learn their 2015 NCAA Regional destination when the tournament field is announced Monday, May 4, on the Golf Channel's selection show.
