The Sam Houston men's golf team finished just two strokes away from a tournament victory in their final outing before the Southland Conference Championships in McKinney in two weeks.
In the final day's action at the Texas State Jim West Intercollegiate, Saint Mary's edged the Bearkats by a stroke with a 288-281-289—858 scorecard to finish with a six-under team total. Sam Houston posted an five-under 72-hole score of 282-289-288—859 on the 7,205-yard par 72 layout at the Wolfdancer Golf Club in Bastrop.
Blake Pugh of Stephen F. Austin won the individual medalist title for the tournament, edging Sam Houston's Zach Cabra and Central Arkansas' Pep Angles by a pair of strokes. Pugh shot a 72-hole total of 70-68-68—207. Cabra carded a 70-69-70—209 total while Angles finished 69-69-71—209.
Other Sam Houston finishes and results included Andrew Ertel 10th 69-72-76—217, Jake McCrory 13th 70-75-73—218, J. T. Taylor 22nd 75-73-72—220 and Logan Boatner 30th 73-75-73—221.
Stephen F. Austin finished eight strokes behind Sam Houston in third place with an 867 total.
The Bearkats will defend their 2014 Southland Conference men's golf championship Monday through Wednesday, April 20-22 in McKinney at the 2015 tournament at Stonebridge Country Club.
