Zach Cabra and J. T. Taylor, both seniors for Sam Houston's 2015 Southland championship squad, have been named as two of the six players on this spring's Academic All-Conference team.
In addition, Cabra has been named as 2015 Southland Conference men's golf “Student-Athlete of the Year.”
A finance major from McKinney, Texas, Cabra becomes the 19th Bearkat to earn “Student-Athlete of the Year” honors in their sport since the award was initiated in 2007. Those 19 individuals have received the honor a total of 22 times.
Both Cabra and Taylor helped lead Sam Houston to its second consecutive Southland Conference men's golf championship and NCAA Regionals appearance. The Bearkats won three tournament championships this year, ranked among the NCAA's top 50 teams all season and finished 12th at the Washington NCAA Regional.
Cabra earned first-team All-Southland Conference honors for the second year in a row, posting a 71.22 regular season stroke average that is the lowest in school history. The senior won individual medalist championships at both the Sam Houston Harold Funston Invitational and the Rice Owl Intercollegiate tournaments.
He placed among the top 10 golfers in eight of Sam Houston's 11 tournaments including a fifth-place performance at the Southland Conference tournament at Stonebridge Country Club in McKinney.
Cabra sports a 3.78 overall grade point average as a finance major.
Taylor also was voted first team All-Southland honors after winning the league's individual medalist championship. He posted a 72.88 stroke average during the 2014-15 regular season and was Sam Houston's top finisher at the NCAA Regional in Washington with an even par 72-72-72—216 score.
A general business major, Taylor holds a 3.38 overall grade point average and was honored as a President's List student with a perfect 4.0 GPA during the 2014 fall semester.
The student-athlete of the year award is presented to the student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated achievement in athletics for at least two years at the nominating institution.
