Kats tied for fifth after opening day

Through the opening two rounds at the Memphis Women's Intercollegiate on Monday, the Sam Houston State golf team sits in a tie for fifth with IUPUI at 46-over and just five strokes behind second-place Ole Miss after day one from the par-71, 6,105-yard Ridgeway Country Club.
The host Memphis Tigers sit well atop the 15-team leaderboard at 21-over followed by Ole Miss (+41), Cincinnati (+43) and McNeese State (+44). Closely behind the Kats are Xavier at 47-over and South Alabama at 48-over.
Senior Nicole Budnik paces play for Sam Houston in a two-way tie for 10th at 8-over after shooting a pair of 75's. Junior teammate Heather Shake trails closely behind in a five-way tie for 12th at 9-over after posting a field-tying best 1-over second round. The 85-member grouping is led by Memphis's Madison Cannon who shot 3-over.
The Bearkats fired 17 birdies, just two behind IUPUI, Memphis and South Alabama's 19. Shake and freshman teammate Jenna Phillips, who is in 31st individually after shooting 14-over, each tapped in four birdies.
Sophomore Sarah Black shot 18-over and is 49th while junior Celeste Lo hit 28-over and ranks 81st. Collectively, the Kats ranked tied for sixth on both par-3's (+16) and par-4's (+46) but sat ninth at 15-over on the courses' four par 5's.
Sam Houston closes out its season-opening tournament on Tuesday, teeing off on its final round at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring for the event will be available here.
