Sam Houston State freshman Mason Weld fired a 7-over, 217, to take 21st individually as the Bearkats men's golf team took 11th at 49-over, 889 from the 36-hole Mark Simpson Colorado Invite at the par-70, 7,110-yard Boulder Country Club on Tuesday.
The Bearkats entered the final day in 10th, at 29-over, 589, but could not make a third-round surge. Host Colorado and Missouri-Kansas City tied for first at 7-over, 847, with no playoff conducted due to lightening in the area.
Sophomore Jake McCrory (72-74-79) took 52nd at 15-over, 225, followed by Jesse Massengale, (78-76-72) who surged 13 spots to finish 16-over, 226 in a tie for 53rd. Junior Andrew Ertel (73-79-77) fell from 57th to a tie for 61st at 19-over, 229 and freshman Camden DeBonis placed 74th (0-74-76) with a two-round score of 6-over, 150.
McCrory posted eagles on the par-5 second each of his first two rounds before paring the hole on Tuesday. The Deer Park product remained the only player to record two eagles, with no other team recording more than one.
The Kats finished with 15 birdies, the fewest among the 12-team field, and were unable to capitalize on the course's 12 par-4's, ranking last with a 4.35 average for a 58-over.
Sam Houston returns to action in two weeks, hosting the Bayou City Collegiate Championship, from Pearland's Golfcrest Country Club, alongside Houston and Rice. The two-day event begins Oct. 12.
