
Bearkats No. 1 Seed In Sunday Bracket Play

Led by Janine Kuwahara and Heather Penatzer who posted the best and third highest individual pin fall averages in Saturday's traditional team play, Sam Houston earned the number one seed in the Sunday's best-of-seven baker bracket play at the Mid-Winter Invitational.
Hosted by Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Arkansas, this weekend, the tournament features 10 nationally-ranked squads including each of the top six teams in the country.
Sam Houston rolled up a 4-1 dual match record for the second day in a row to stand 8-2 for the event. Arkansas State and Nebraska also stand 8-2 following two days action.
The Bearkats, however, lead in total pins with a 204.5 average. The SHSU women will face McKendree in the opening round of bracket action. Following the Kats in pin fall team standings are McKendree (201.9), Vanderbilt (200.9) and Arkansas State (198.6).
Saturday's traditional team results included wins over Lincoln University (980 – 790), defending national champion Nebraska (1,071 – 1,069), Stephen F. Austin (1,068 – 853) and Vanderbilt (1,062 – 976). The Kats' only loss came to Vanderbilt (1,062 – 976).
Kuwahara posted a 221.4 pinfall average playing in all five matches Saturday. Penatzer's five-match average was 220.6. Other averages for the Bearkats included Anna Groce (204.2), Erin Brown (181.0), Madysen Keller (212.0) and Stephanie Zavala (184.7).
Sam Houston won four of its five matches on Friday in team baker action, defeating Central Missouri 975 – 968, Wisconsin-Whitewater 1,065 – 888, Jackson State 1,076 – 951 and Alabama State 986 – 815. The team's only loss Friday was to McKendree 1,073 – 1,011.
The tournament is the first of the spring semester schedule for each of the 14 teams in the field. The event, which is being held at the Jonesboro Bowling Center, features 10 nationally rank squads including each of the top six squads.
Sam Houston's 2015-16 dual match record now stands at 56-23.
