
Bowlers go 5-0 on first day in Arlington

The Sam Houston women's bowling team opened play at the Prairie View A&M Invitational in Arlington Friday by winning all five of its team baker dual matches.
The Kats defeated No. 17 Monmouth 1040 – 962, No. 11 North Carolina A&T 1022 – 961, No. 21 Prairie View A&M 1010 – 995, Texas Southern 976 – 851 and No. 10 Maryland-Eastern Shore 961 – 950.
Heather Penatzer doubled in the 10th frame to power the Kats past UMES in the final match.
The victories upped the Bearkats' season dual match record to 63-25. Sam Houston currently stands No. 4 in the National Ten Pins Coaches Association poll.
Sam Houston was one of three teams to go 5-0 in Friday's action. No. 8 Stephen F. Austin and No. 3 Vanderbilt both won all five of their matches as well. However, defending NCAA champion and No. 2 ranked Nebraska leads the event in total pins after going 1-3 for the day.
The Cornhuskers averaged 214.4 pins Friday. SFA is in second place with a 213.0 average followed by Vanderbilt (207.4), No. 1 Arkansas State (204.3) and UMES (201.6). Sam Houston stands fifth with a 200.4 average. Total pins in both Friday's action and Saturday's traditional team play will decide the seeding for Sunday's best-of-seven bracket action.
The Kats will look for strong performances in traditional team play with several player with outstanding averages this season.Janine Kuwahara owns a 209.25 average. Other Bearkat averages include Heather Penatzer (204.46), Anna Groce (200.83), Carrie Hopkinson (198.65) and Erin Brown (187.86).
