Kats take 12th at Bayou Collegiate Classic

PEARLAND, Texas – Sam Houston State men's golf could not find its groove on the final day of the 54-hole Bayou City Collegiate Classic, falling three spots in the standings to finish 12th at 29-over, 893, from the par-72, 7,272-yard Golfcrest Country Club.
Sam Houston was led by Jesse Massengale (70-76-73 – 219), who rebounded from a tough second round to shoot a final-round 73. The redshirt sophomore finished in a nine-way tie for 21st at 3-over.
Teammate Dominick Gennuso (72-74-75 – 221) fell seven spots down the leaderboard the final day but came away with some impressive results, resulting in a five-way tie for 34th at 5-over. Battling rainy conditions during the final round, Andrew Ertel (73-71-78 – 222) also was unable to gain ground, finishing tied for 39th at 6-over.
Camden DeBonis (75-72-79 – 226) finished 10-over in a tie for 56th while Noah Steele (78-72-79 –229) ended in 68th at 13-over and Mason Weld (78-78-76 – 232) took a four-way tie for 71st at 16-over.
Kansas claimed the 2016 team title, racing out to a monstrous lead after the first day and never looking back. The Jayhawks posted a 12-under, 852 in the win. Houston and UT Arlington finished tied for second at 5-over, 869. Lamar's Mans Berglund was the individual champion, pacing play with a 9-under, 207.
The Bearkats return to play next week at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, hosting by New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M. The two-day event begins Monday as Sam Houston looks to rebound. A season ago, the Kats placed seventh at the Intercollegiate, paced by an 11th-place finisher from DeBonis.
