
Sam Houston hits Hawaii for Makai Invite

PRINCEVILLE, HI – The Sam Houston State men's golf program makes its second ever trip to Hawaii, participating in the three-day, 54-hole Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational beginning Sunday from the par-72, 7,223-yard Princeville Makai Course.
The squad will play 18 holes each day with a shotgun start slated for 8 a.m. local time (1 p.m. CT). The 19-team field will feature strong competition including No. 21 Ole Miss, No. 24 Missouri and No. 25 Arizona State.
Other participants include Cal Poly, Colorado State, Eastern Tennessee State, Georgia Southern, Hawai'I, Idaho, Louisiana, Louisville, Missouri – Kansas City, San Diego, San Francisco, Pepperdine, Princeton, UC Irvine and Utah Valley.
In its last competition, three players finished in the top-25 while the squad secured seventh for a second straight year from the two-day, Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate.
As a team, the Bearkats shot a 16-over, 868, led by Camden DeBonis (73-68-74 – 215) who fired a 2-over to finish in a three-way tie for 15th.
Teammate Andrew Ertel shot three-straight 72's to finish in a three-way tie for 18th one stroke back at 3-over, 216. Mason Weld (69-75-73 – 217) wrapped up Sam Houston competitors in the top 25, dropping four spots on the final day to finish at 4-over in a three-way tie for 21st.
Meanwhile, Jesse Massengale (73-76-70 – 219) put a charge into his third round, shooting 1-under to leap 13 spots on the leaderboard. The redshirt sophomore finished 6-over in a five-way tie for 28th.
The Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational will be the final of five fall tournaments. Sam Houston has finished inside the top-10 in three of four events highlighted by a fourth-place finisher at the Hartford Hawk Invitational from Hartford, Conn., in mid-September.
