Sam Houston State sophomore golfer Jake McCrory fired a 2-under, 70, to cut seven strokes off his second round score and finish in a five-way tie for 26th to highlight final-round play at the three-day All-American Intercollegiate from the Golf Club of Houston.
As a team, the Bearkats finished tied with Rice for 13th at 46-over, 910, among the highly-competitive 16-team field. Arkansas came storming back from a 13-stroke deficit to overtake Houston at 9-under, 855, to claim the team title.
“Jake played really well,” fourth-year head coach Brandt Kieschnick said. “He is starting to find his way. He was very impressive. He worked for an hour on the range yesterday just trying to fine-tune. He had no bogeys. He didn't make any mistakes and played as good as I have seen him play in a Bearkat uniform.”
Sam Houston junior Andrew Ertel finished tied for 41st at 8-over, 224, after falling back from a nine-way tie for 24th. The Woodlands product shot 75-72-77 on the weekend. Teammate Jesse Massengale (73-78-79 – 230) finished 14-over in a tie for 62nd while Mason Weld (80-76-79 – 235) concluded at 19-over in 74th and Camden DeBonis (80-78-79 – 237) went 21-over in 79th.
“We couldn't get anything going each day,” Kieschnick said. “We played about 14 good holes and had a hard time making birdies. It was a really good experience for the guys to see what it takes to play at the highest level.”
Houston finished second at 8-under, followed by South Carolina (4-over), Baylor (12-over) and SMU (14-over) to round out the top five. Fellow Southland Conference competitor McNeese State came in at 27-over in 10th and Houston Baptist finished 52-over in 16th.
The Bearkats return to play a week from Monday at Pepperdine's Jones Invitational from North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. Fans can follow @BearkatGolf on Twitter for the latest updates and visit GoBearkats.com for further action.
