Bearkats look to continue strong spring

After capturing the team championship at Texas State's All There August Challenge in the spring opener, the Sam Houston women's golf program looks to continue the momentum, taking part in the two-day Islander Classic beginning on Monday.
The 54-hole tournament takes place at the par-72, 6,093-yard Corpus Christi Country Club and is an event the Bearkats have taken part in each season since 2004.
After shooting 1-under through the opening 36 holes in her last outing, Sarah Black posted a 4-over on the final 18 to finish in third place individually with a two-day score of 3-over, 216. The Andrews product earned her best finish in almost a year when she tied for first at last spring's Islanders Classic.
Teammate Heather Shake captured a fourth place tie at 4-over, 218. The junior transfer fired a second-round 69 to bounce back from her opening-round 75. On Monday, Shake shot 74 to retain the fourth-place tie with Stina Resen of Little Rock.
At last year's Islander Classic, Black and teammate Alisa White were a part of a five-way tie for medalist at the weather shortened event. White ultimately won the sudden death playoff, sinking a 30-foot birdie putt on the first hole.
As a team, the Kats finished third, just three strokes from ending in a three-way tie for first place. Originally scheduled for 54 holes Monday and Tuesday on the par 72, 6,093 yard Corpus Christi Country Club course, the event was shortened to 36 holes with 18 each day.
Current players Celeste Lo (82-75 – 157) finished in a tie for 23rd while Nicole Budnik (83-82-165) finished in a tie for 55th a season ago. Live scoring is not available for the event but fans are encouraged to visit GoBearkats.com as the conclusion each day for a full recap.
