Bearkats improve to 5th entering final day

The Sam Houston State women's golf team trimmed 18 strokes off its first-round score to surge ahead two spots on the leaderboard for fifth in the 2016 Southland Conference Women's Golf Championship at the Hills Course at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney, Texas.
Entering Wednesday's final round, Sam Houston's Heather Shake (75-73) is in fourth at 4-over, 148, cutting two strokes off her first round total to shoot 73 while advancing two spots. With a two-day score of 616, the Bearkats are seven strokes back of fourth-place Stephen F. Austin, while Lamar leads at 15-over, 591.
Sam Houston's Sarah Black (77-73 – 150) moved seven spots up the leaderboard to finish her second round in eighth at 6-over. Nicole Budnik also impressed on day two, rebounding from an opening-round 83 to shoot 74 and climb 12 spots up the leaderboard in 20th at 13-over, 157.
Jenna Phillips (83-79 – 162) continued the positive trend to improve from 32nd to 29th at 18-over while Celeste Lo (82-83 – 165) is in 38th at 21-over.
Central Arkansas is currently in second (600), followed by Houston Baptist (608) and Stephen F. Austin (609). Lamar's Wenny Chang leads all competitors at 2-under, 142, followed by teammate Taylor Stockton (143) and Central Arkansas' Brenda Gonzalez (146).
Play concludes Wednesday with teams teeing off at 8 a.m. The Bearkats' Lo gets underway at 8:45 a.m. followed by Phillips at 8:54 a.m., Budnik at 9:03 a.m., Black at 9:12 a.m. and Shake at 9:21 a.m.
