McCrory named Southland Men's Golfer of Month

Sam Houston State sophomore Jake McCrory was named the Southland Conference Men's Golfer of the Month for April presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league office announced Wednesday.
McCrory tied for fourth at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic to help the Bearkats finish second in the field of 16. The sophomore from Deer Park (Deer Park H.S.), tied for the fourth-lowest three-round score in school history with an 11-under par 205 (66-68-71).
His opening round of 66 put him in a tie for the eighth-lowest single round in the Sam Houston annals. McCrory helped the Bearkats card the third-lowest team score in school history with a 13-under par 851 for 54 holes. In three rounds, McCrory averaged 68.33 strokes with a low round of 66.
“He made a bunch of birdies and he made maybe three bogies,” fourth-year head coach Brandt Kieschnick said. “That's the best I've seen him control the ball and putt. He made a good decision on every shot. He has been playing good these last three events. It was an extension of his good practices.”
The top finish was the first of McCrory's season and marked a fourth-straight top 30 finish. He also finished 25th two tournaments ago at the Southwestern Jones Invitational, firing a final-round 70 for a 54-hole score of 219.
The Bearkats fired a 13-under, 851, the third lowest 54-hole round in team history, while finishing second at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic from Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz. Meanwhile, Sam Houston's opening 36-hole mark of 558 ranked just one stroke off the program best.
“We had a really good two and a half weeks off where we really prepared hard,” Kieschnick said. “We had tournament situations each week. They had been shooting a lot of low scores in practice. With a year worth of tournament experience and quality practices, we really positioned ourselves to compete. This is the best I've seen all five play together.”
