Sam Houston's Maddie Mortimore has earned another athletic and academic award.
The senior from Farnham, Surrey in England is one of 12 student-athletes who have been named to the 2016 Academic All-Southland Conference squad.
Mortimore already has been honored as a CoSIDA NCAA Division I All-Region selection, an All-Southland tennis player, one of Sam Houston's “Student-Athletes of the Year” and as Bearkat team “Most Valuable Player.”
This spring Mortimore won ten of her 11 matches in league play. For the season she compiled a 17-3 record in dual match play and a 26-7 combined won-loss slate in both tournament and dual match play. The 26 victories rank as the third highest single season individual win total in Bearkat tennis history.
Mortimore completed her four-year career with 63 singles victories, also the third highest total in Sam Houston women's tennis annals. Her 10 wins in league action ties a Bearkat season mark.
An economics and international business major with a perfect 4.0 four-year grade point average, Mortimore plans to attend graduate school following completion of her bachelor's degree.
The Southland's Academic All-Conference teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland Conference university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
