HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State continues its eight-game homestand with a visit from UT Arlington on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Prior to the game, the program will host its third-annual Bearkat Country Crawfish Boil presented by Bill Fick Ford. The event, which features live music and all-you-can-eat crawfish, is free for the first 500 students will a valid Bearkat OneCard and $20 for all others.
The Bearkats are riding a seven-game winning streak and have won 13 of the last 14. With its second consecutive Southland Conference three-game sweep, Sam Houston is off to its best start in league play in program history at 6-0.
Sam Houston leads the league in sacrifice bunts (25), earned run average (2.83), opposing batting average (.241) and fewest runs allowed (64).
Individually, Blake Chisolm ranks first in slugging percentage (.725) and on base percentage (.567) while Bryce Johnson leads the conference in stolen bases (13) and Taylor Beene ranks first in sac bunts (6). Heath Donica is first in strikeouts (46) and innings pitched (36.0). Hayden Wesneski is first in wins (5) while Nick Mikolajchak is tied for the top spot in saves (4).
UT Arlington heads to Huntsville fresh off a series victory against Georgia State in its first Sun Belt weekend of the year. The squad has played seven games against Southland Conference opponents, splitting a pair with Abilene Christian and Stephen F. Austin while sweeping A&M-Corpus Christi.
The matchup between the Bearkats and Mavericks will be the 97th all-time between the two programs. Sam Houston owns a slight 51-45 advantage but has dropped four-straight including a 7-6 defeat in the last meeting on March 18, 2014.
The Bearkats are coming off a 4-0 week, highlighted by a .462 (6 for 13) performance from outfielder Clayton Harp. The sophomore provided a three-run double with two outs in the eighth at Rice, scoring the winning runs in the 6-2 win. He tallied six runs scored and nine RBIs in the four games.
Sam Houston continues non-conference action on Thursday, beginning a three-game set against Buffalo. The Kats will be broadcast three times on ESPN3 this week, including Tuesday's game against the Mavericks. Tickets are also available by calling (936) 294-1729.
