HUNTSVILLE – Freshman goalkeeper Abby DeLozier collected a season-high 14 saves in goal, but Abilene Christian rolled to a 3-0 shutout over the Sam Houston State soccer team (3-10-3, 2-5-2 SLC), Friday night at Pritchett Field.
The Bearkats took three corner kicks in the first five minutes, but they were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. ACU broke the game open in the 18th minute after Christina Arteaga dribbled around her defender and sunk the shot past DeLozier to put the Wildcats up, 1-0. Artega struck again eight minutes later on a breakaway, extending ACU's lead 2-0.
Katy Johnson, Bailey Strong, Taylor Pritchard, Lindsey Bienski and Hannah Dupin each recorded shots in the opening half, but two missed the mark and three were brought in by ACU goalkeeper Rachel Johnson.
The rain came at the start of the second half, forcing more aggressive action in the closing 45 minutes. Micaela Birt and Lexi Bullard tried to score, but they were halted by the ACU defense. DeLozier regained control and stepped up to make an impressive 10 saves in the second half behind her four in the first half.
However, with seven seconds remaining, ACU's Samantha Vestal scored a rebounded shot off the post to give ACU the 3-0 victory. With the loss, the Bearkats fall to 3-10-3 on the season and 2-5-2 in Southland Conference play.
