HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats have changed its weekend schedule, but are still set for three games against Cincinnati this weekend, beginning with the opener of a Friday doubleheader at 3 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium.
The series was originally set to be a three-game series beginning Friday with each day; however, the likelihood of inclement weather in the area has forced officials to change things to a doubleheader on Friday followed by a single game on Saturday. First pitch for Game 1 is set for 3:00 p.m. with Game 2 to begin 45 minutes after Game 1's conclusion. Game officials will determine a game time for Saturday's Game 3 on Friday after allowing for further development of the weekend's weather forecast.
Each game can be followed via live stats or by following @BearkatsBSB on Twitter. The second game of Friday's doubleheader is currently slated to be aired on ESPN3 with Jason Barfield providing the call.
Fans planning on attending are encouraged to park in lot on the west side – press box side – of Bowers Stadium upon entry to The Don. Those wishing to purchase tickets in advance can do so HERE.
The Bearkats are coming off a weekend series win over reigning MAC champion Kent State, taking the final two games of the series after dropping Game 1 by virtue of a ninth-inning rally by the Golden Flashes. This will be the first ever meeting between two of the three teams in the nation with such a mascot.
Sam Houston is set to give the ball to right-hander Riley Gossett for his first start since 2016 in the series opener before turning to lefty Seth Ballew under the lights on Friday night. Sophomore Hayden Wesneski is the projected starter for Game 3, just five days after being named the Southland Conference's Pitcher of the Week following his stellar outing in a win over Kent State.
The Kats were dynamic offensively in the series, swiping three bases and scoring 21 runs in a variety of ways against the Golden Flashes. Hunter Hearn and Andrew Fregia each turned in big weekends with Hearn driving in seven runs in the three games while Fregia had a homer, triple and four RBI of his own.
Meanwhile, Cincinnati will be coming to Texas after spending Opening Weekend in California where they picked up two wins in three games against Cal and San Diego. The Bearcats picked up a win in the opener, 3-1, over the Bears and followed that up by taking the back end of a Sunday doubleheader against the Toreros.
Under first-year head coach Scott Googins the Bearcats are set to throw left-hander J.T. Perez in the series opener. Perez earned the win over Cal with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work in that game.
Their Game 2 starter is still to be determined, but they are scheduled to turn to another lefty – Cam Alldred – in the series finale. He took a no-decision in his first start of the season, allowing two runs in 5.0 innings in what was an extra-inning loss to San Diego on Sunday.
