SHSU senior named top women's golfer by Lone Star Golf Magazine
HUNTSVILLE - A memorable year for senior golfer Hanna Alberto is capped with one more honor. Alberto was recognized by Lone Star Golf Magazine as the Texas Women's Player of the Year.Â
Â
Alberto, who was named the Southland Conference player of the year, had an incredible spring for the Bearkats, winning four tournament titles, breaking the single season mark set by Shelby Hardy in 2013. Those wins also brought her career victory total to seven, which is also a school record.Â
Â
"This is another great honor for Hanna's storied career," said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. "Winning the Texas Women's Amateur this summer was a huge accomplishment and we are proud of how well she represents Bearkat golf and Sam Houston State University."
Â
Alberto, who finished third at the Southland Championship, notched wins at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational, the Texas State Invitational, the UNF Collegiate and the HBU Husky Invitational. Her 72.03 scoring average this season is the lowest in school history, bettering her mark of 72.73 last season.Â
Â
This year, Alberto was also selected to play in the inaugural Augusta National Women's Invitational.
Â
That strong play carried over into the summer for Alberto. She won the 98th Texas Women's Amateur event, surviving 18 qualifying holes and then outlasting the field in five rounds of match play.Â
Â
She also took a runner up finish at the Texas Golf Association Women's Stroke Play Championship. It was her third top 3 finish at the event. Â
Â
Alberto has three top 6 finishes this fall for the Bearkats, who will get the spring season started on Feb. 11 at the Texas State Invitational. Â
