
Kats compete at Texas A&M Twilite

COLLEGE STATION - The Sam Houston State Bearkats competed in the Texas A&M Aggie Twilight on Saturday following a week in which the men's team was ranked 17th in the country.
The women's team 4x400 relay team took first place with a time of 3:47.89. The participating runners were Teylor Jones, Teona Spivey, Jasmin Mitchell and Payton Wells.
Junior Halie Daniel recorded a career-best throw in the shot put with a mark of 14.63m (48' 0”) and took home first place honors among all competitors.
Brian Orlando, Aaron Akens and Joshua Hernandez each competed in the weight throw event with Orlando recording a career-best 15.00m throw. Akens (17.90m) and Hernandez (19.07m) both tied their second-best throws of the season.
The highlight of the previous meet, sophomore Clayton Fritsch followed up a record-setting week by recording the events' best jump in the pole vault with a jump of 5.34m.
On the sprinter's side, Christian Hamberlin finished the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.91. That is now the freshman's season-best time as he surpassed his previous mark from the Houston Invitational in which he ran a 6.99.
Freshman Eric Callaway competed in the 200-meter dash and posted a mark of 21.78 which is good for a new season-best. His previous season-best was set at the Howie Ryan Invitational (21.88). The top performer in the 200-meter dash for the women, sophomore Kenaysia Dixon recorded a time of 25.36. That mark is her second best of the season just behind her finish at the FasTrak Invitational (25.06).
Senior Eric Pouncy and freshman Marlon Hardeman both participated in the 400-meter dash. Both runners surpassed their previous season-bests. Pouncy posted a time of 4.82 and Hardeman posted a time of 49.20.
A few distance runners established new personal best in their events. Freshman Austin Zirkel (4:24.38) and junior Alex Hernandez (4:25.12) set their marks in the mile and freshman Brendan Gilbert (9:34.76) set a new personal best in the 3000.
The indoor track season is drawing to a close as the Bearkats prepare to compete in the Southland Indoor Championships. The championships will run from Feb 24-25 in Birmingham, Ala.
