FRISCO – Sam Houston State senior outfielder Clayton Harp has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week, per a release by league officials on Tuesday afternoon.
He is the second Bearkat in as many weeks to earn a weekly league honor after teammate Hayden Wesneski was named the SLC Pitcher of the Week last week.
Harp was instrumental in the Bearkats pulling off a sweep of the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns over the weekend at Don Sanders Stadium, running Sam Houston's record to 5-1 early on in the season. The senior outfielder came to the plate 14 times and hit safely eight times, driving in nine runs, scoring five times and crushing three home runs.
He kicked off the weekend in loud fashion, in the series opener, hitting a three-run homer in his third at-bat of the game to cut the Bearkat deficit to just 5-4 and then delivered a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give SHSU the win.
Harp followed that up with three more hits and two more runs scored in the nightcap, scoring the winning run on a walk-off passed ball in the bottom of the ninth. In the series finale, he gave the Kats an early lead with a first-inning RBI single and capped a 3-for-5 game with a three-run homer with two outs in the eighth that iced the game, and a series sweep.
He and the rest of the Bearkats kick off a tough week that includes three opponents who qualified for last year's College World Series on Tuesday night when they travel to Austin to take on No. 22 Texas on the Longhorn Network. They then return home to face TCU at Don Sanders Stadium on Wednesday on ESPN+.
The Kats will take part in the Frisco Classic this weekend at Dr Pepper Ballpark, opening up with Mississippi State on Friday before battling Nebraska on Saturday and Texas Tech on Sunday.
