FRISCO – Junior pitcher Hayden Wesneski has been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, per a release league by officials on Monday afternoon.
Wesneski continued to be at the top of his game on Friday, throwing his first complete game of the season and the second of his career to lead the Bearkats to a win in the series opener at New Orleans. The junior right-hander allowed just one walk in the first 6.2 innings of work before UNO registered its first hit and needed just 107 pitches to navigate the night.
A native of Cypress, Wesneski did not have a double-digit strikeout game in either of his first two years with the program, but his career-high 13 strikeouts vs the Privateers marked the fourth time in six starts this season that he has racked up at least 10 punchouts.
He was in position to close out the game with just two hits allowed until UNO strung together three consecutive singles with two outs in the ninth to plate its second run of the night.
Wesneski is now 4-0 on the season with a league-best 55 strikeouts to just six walks allowed, while also leading the SLC with 43.2 innings pitched.
The Kats are back in action on Tuesday when they head to Houston to open up the Don Sanders Cup series at Schroeder Park. They will then return home to host McNeese for three games of league play this weekend at Don Sanders Stadium.
