Yamalapalli named SLC Player of the Week

FRISCO - Sam Houston State sophomore Sahaja Yamalapalli was named the Southland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday, per a release by league officials.
In the Bearkats' Southland Conference opener, Yamalapalli secured a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Nicholls' Stephanie Barnett. On Saturday, Yamalapalli recorded another straight-set win over New Orleans' Trang Dao, blanking Dao 6-0 in the opening frame before taking set two 6-4 to extend her singles win streak to four matches.
The Hyderabad, India, native teamed up with Isidora Zivkovic to claim a doubles match against the Colonels, taking down Lingfeng Gu and Mariia Kozachok 6-2. The duo's match against New Orleans went unfinished.
The Bearkats will look to add on to their 2-0 start to league play this weekend when they travel to Abilene Christian and UIW.
Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school's sports information director. Voting for one's own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
