Kats capture Bayou City tournament

PEARLAND – The Sam Houston men's golf team held off a late charge by UTSA to win the 14-team Bayou City Collegiate by six strokes Tuesday.

“This is the third win this spring and second in a row,” head coach Brandt Kieschnick said. “I love how the team is preparing. It is the same guys doing the same thing every week, and that leads to winning and believing. My hat's off to Robert Thompson, our volunteer assistant. He was coaching this week and he did a great job.”
Junior Levi Valadez finished tied for fifth at 3-under after shooting rounds of 70, 72 and 71 for a total of 213. He had three birdies and two bogeys in the
Freshman Luis Carrera had the lead heading into Tuesday's final round with rounds of 67 and 70, but he closed with a 5-over 77 to finish tied for seventh with a 2-under total of 214. Junior William Holcomb also tied for seventh with rounds of 71, 70 and 73.
Freshman Jack Randle finished tied for 43rd at 9-over 225 and junior Noah Steele tied for 47th at 10-over 226.
The Bearkats will next compete at the Southland Conference Championship April 22-24 at Stonebridge County Club in McKinney.
“We have had three wins and a second in five events this spring, so we just need to keep doing what we have been doing,” Kieschnick said. “This is good for momentum, but we respect next week. We have to be on top of our game and keep our guard up. We know the way we prepare and play will lead to doing what we want to do.”
