Box Score COLLEGE STATION — The Sam Houston State tennis team picked up to big singles wins but fell to No. 18 Texas A&M 5-2 at the Mitchell Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
Junior
Sahaja Yamalapalli knocked off Katya Townsend in a hard-fought No. 1 singles match. Yamalapalli, the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Year, defeated Townsend 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5) to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Freshman
Emma Goedkoop also picked up her second victory this spring. She dug in after falling in the first set and outlasted Renee McBryde 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) in the No. 6 singles spot.
Texas A&M's Tatiana Makarova defeated
Isidora Zivkovic in No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-1, and SHSU junior
Karla De La Luz Montalvo fell in No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-2 to Jayci Goldsmith.
Lusine Chobanyan fell in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 to Dorthea Faa-Hviding, and senior Dena Nicolaou lost to Jessica Anzo 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
The Aggies took the doubles point by winning the first two matches.
"It was a strong performance overall by the team this evening," head coach
Rob Hubbard said. "Much was learned, however, we will be back at work Tuesday to continue to improve."
Sam Houston State (1-1) hosts UTRGV at 1 p.m. Friday at the McAdams Tennis Center.
