Men's golf adds three for fall of 2021

Sam Houston State head golf coach Brandt Kieschnick will welcome the addition of three new golfers to the men's program next fall.Â

The Kats will be adding Gene Chaikangwal from Bangkok, Thailand, and a pair of Texans, Josh German from Gun Barrel City and Bret Gray from Universal City.

"We could not be happier with the quality and character of our 2021 signing class," Kieschnick said. "We were very fortunate to bring in some of the best talent in Texas along with a great international talent. I saw Bret and Gene play in the summer of 2019 and knew they would fit our team well.Â

"We had Josh on our radar and he really played well this summer and is a great fit for us. Our program is built on the pillars of humility, hard work, wisdom, discipline, and team. These are high-character and high-achieving players and individuals that fit our pillars perfectly and will help us to continue our winning tradition."

Chaikangwal has a best World Amateur Golf Ranking  of 1,054. He was second in the prestigious 2019 FCG International Championship firing 71-74-66 and third at the 2019 Singha Thailand Junior World Championship with rounds of 76-74-73-71. He won three Thailand Kids Golf Tour events in 2019. He shot 78-71 in 2019 Thailand Masters on the Asian Tour Professional circuit and competed against numerous European PGA Tour professionals.?
"I saw Gene at the 2019 Callaway Junior World and loved his consistency," Kieschnick said. "Gene has played very well on the national level competing and contending for Thailand's biggest junior and amateur events. I was very impressed when he came to U.S. and had a chance to win the FCG International. His game can travel and his maturity will help make a positive impact when he arrives. We are very excited he has joined our program."

German, from Mabank High School, is ranked No. 5 in Texas in Class of 2021 on Junior Golf Scoreboard and is ranked No. 70 in Nationally in Class of 2021. He had a strong summer with three wins and four runner-up finishes. He won the 2020 NTPGA #WHOSNEXT Championship firing 68-71 and also won the NTPGA East Texas 36 Hole with rounds of 67-73. His third win was at the TJGT Cypress Lakes Summer Classic firing 69-74. Runner-up finishes came in the NTPGA AAT Summer Kickoff, TJGT Traditions Spring Invitational, TJGT DFW Fall Kickoff and the TJGT Lone Star Boys Invitational. He is a member of the Mabank golf team and a starter for the basketball team.

"Josh is first an athlete and then a golfer," Kieschnick said. "He loves to compete and is a great player. When he told me he played basketball for his high school along with golf, I was excited because athletes find ways to win. Josh had an amazing summer and shot a lot of rounds in the 60's. His competitiveness showed this summer as he posted a bunch of under par rounds and had a chance to win almost every week. We are very excited for next fall when he arrives on campus."

Gray, from Clements High School, is ranked No. 14 in Texas in Class of 2021 on Junior Golf Scoreboard and is ranked No. 115 in Nationally in Class of 2021. He had two wins and two runner-up finishes in the summer of 2020. He claimed the title at the TJGT Landa Park Summer Blast firing 67-67 as well as the TJGT The Bandit Junior Classic with rounds of 69-74. He was second at the STPGA New Braunfels Showcase and the STPGA Prestige Tour Open firing. He also logged three other top 10 finishes this summer.

"Bret is a very good player and really got it going this summer," Kieschnick "He competed well with multiple chances to win along with firing a lot of rounds in the 60's. Bret has a great golf IQ and asks the right questions which shows how well he played this summer. We are very fortunate to have him join us and we look forward to watching him continue to develop and help us win championships."
