Kats finish first at Texas State

KYLE – The Sam Houston State women's golf team got the spring off to a good start by sharing the tournament title at the Texas State Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.

The Kats along with UTSA each shot a total score of 896 to take the top spot on the leaderboard. It is the first top finish of the season for the Bearkats. UTSA was awarded the championship trophy based on a tie breaker.

Individually the Bearkats had three golfers in the top 6 of the leaderboard, with Hanna Alberto leading the way, finishing in tie for second at 2-over par. Leah Alberto was three shots back in fourth and Jennifer Herbst finished a stroke back in sixth. All three finished out the day shooting a 74 in the final round.

For Leah Alberto, the fourth-place finish is her best as a Bearkat. Her previous top mark was a 15^th place finish earlier this year. Her 3-round total of 222 is also a career best. She played consistent golf, leading the field in pars with 40

Herbst was playing in her first tournament as a Bearkat. The Freshman was steady all three rounds, shooting 74-75-74.

The Bearkats will be back in action in two weeks for the Islander Classic in Corpus Christi.
