Bearkats win Islander Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI - The women's golf team held off a couple of Southland Conference foes on Tuesday to win their second straight tournament, taking the title at the Islander Classic in Corpus Christi.

Sam Houston shot a final round to edge Houston Baptist by one shot. Incarnate Word finished third while the hosts, Texas A&M Corpus Christi were fourth. Birdies on the last two holes from Hanna Alberto and Zulaikah Nurziana Nasser flipped the Kats to the top of the leader board at the end of the day.

Leah Alberto had her best finish as a collegiate golfer, taking second place, one shot out of the lead. She shot a 70 on Tuesday, opening her rounds with birdies on Nos. 2 and 3. She was steady all tournament, finishing third in the field in pars with 35, over the 54-hole event.

Hanna Alberto finished one shot back of Leah, shooting a 71 on Tuesday and took home fourth place. It's her second straight top 5 finish and her 6^th time in the top 10 this season.

Two other Bearkats finished in the top 20 with Viera Permata Rosada closing things out in 16^th at 10-over par and Zulaikah Nurziana Nasser a stroke back in 18^th. Jennifer Herbst finished 28^th at 18-over par.

The Bearkats will now head to Florida next week to take part in the UNF Collegiate in Jacksonville.
