
Yamalapalli receives SLC academic honor

FRISCO — Sam Houston State junior Sahaja Yamalapalli has been named to the 2020 Southland Conference women's tennis all-academic team, the league office announced Thursday.

Yamalapalli landed on the all-academic first team with an overall grade point average of 3.79. She is majoring in food science and nutrition.

The Hyderabad, India native was 11-2 at No. 1 singles this season and 3-1 in league play to help the Bearkats go 4-0 before the season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic. She had wins at No. 1 singles against nationally ranked Texas A&M, North Texas and Rice.

Yamalapalli went 10-1 in league No. 1 singles play, including a nine-match winning streak, and 16-4 overall in 2019 to earn SLC Player and Student-Athlete of the Year. Her 16-4 dual match singles record stands as the third highest wins total and second-best dual match winning percentage (.895) in Sam Houston State history, matching her mark from 2018.
