For the third straight year, senior golfer William Holcomb was named to the Southland Conference men's golf All-Academic team.Â
Â
Holcomb, a general business major, was named a second-team selection this year. He has posted a cumulative GPA of 3.48 in his time at Sam Houston. As a sophomore in 2018 and his junior year in 2019 he was named the Student Athlete of the Year.
Â
Holcomb notched his first win of his collegiate career this season, taking top honors at the Bentwater Invitational. He opened the year with a second place finish at the Sam Hill Intercollegiate hosted by Southern Miss, firing a career-best round of 64 on the final day.Â
Â
He had two other top 10 finishes this season, taking fourth place at the Prairie Club Invitational and 8th place at the Border Olympics. His scoring average of 71.79 was the second-best single season of his career.Â
Â
Seven times this season he shot a score in the 60s and 14 times was par or better.Â
Â
The men's golf season was cut short with three regular season tournaments remaining before the Bearkats would have had a chance to defend their Southland Conference title.Â
The all-academic teams are voted on by a head coach, sports information director and academic/compliance staff member from each Southland Conference institution. In order to be nominated for the academic all-conference teams, student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA and have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member schools, votes for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland Student-Athlete of the Year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All Student-Athlete of the Year nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
