The Sam Houston State tennis program has been named an All-Academic Team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for the eighth consecutive year, the organization announced Monday.
In order to be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale) and all varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year.
"As you can see our team has been getting it done in the classroom as well as on court," head coach Rob Hubbard said. "I am very proud of their academic results this past season as we continue our athletic department goal to develop the whole student-athlete. A big thanks and kudos to our athletic department's academic support team of Associate AD, Chris Thompson, Dr. Jessica Payne, Heather Self and Josh Reynolds. I've always believed in the "it takes a village" for success model and the team's academic results only confirms that philosophy.
Lusine Chobanyan, Petra Kaszas, Ryli Ruffin and Emma Goedkoop were also selected by ITA as Division I Women Scholar-Athletes. To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, players must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year.
"I am also extremely proud of the individual academic achievements of Lusine, Petra, Ryli and Emma for being recognized as ITA Scholar-Athletes," he added. "Three of the four achieved 4.0 GPAs for the academic year with the other 3.8. We also had three other team members who just barely missed the award which shows the level of academic performance the program has been producing."
